Searchlight is proud of the talented women across our team, each bringing unique skills and experiences. International Women’s Day allows us to celebrate their contributions and hear from Cathy Alford, Hayley Henry, Melanie Hill, Amy Osterley, Anne Fenton, Georgia Williams and Candace Francis-Dwyer as they reflect on their journeys and share some words of inspirations.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

For Melanie, International Women’s Day serves as a powerful reminder that women must be taken seriously in the workforce. Others see it as an opportunity to uplift and celebrate women. There’s recognition of the progress made, women now hold senior leadership positions and have a strong voice in boardrooms. It’s also a time to reflect on the remarkable successes of women and their invaluable contributions to society.

Which women inspire you the most?

Inspiration comes from many places. Some look to personal connections including strong sisters, friends and family members who lead with resilience and determination. Others admire women who have overcome adversity, pushing boundaries in their fields. Anne is inspired by trailblazers like Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Hayley by Michelle Obama and Beyoncé. Pioneers in business and STEM, such as Sara Davies and Gill Cooke, who have championed diversity and entrepreneurship are paving the way for future generations of women to thrive.

Have you faced barriers in your career?

Like many women, challenges have been met with perseverance. Early experiences, such as earning less than a male colleague became lessons in advocating for fairness. Decisions to walk away from roles that undervalue women’s contributions highlight the importance of knowing one’s worth. Navigating male-dominated industries has required a blend of confidence, humour and persistence, while balancing career and motherhood often demands constant proof of expertise. Yet, support systems and resilience have played a crucial role in pushing forward.

Advice for young women in their careers?

Reflecting on her experience as a recent graduate, Candace advises women to persevere, stay positive and be patient with themselves. Kindness, ambition, and consistency can shape a strong foundation, while the power of support networks cannot be overstated. It’s essential to challenge inequalities, ask questions and push for opportunities. Hard work, persistence, and continuous self-improvement will pave the way for success, both personally and professionally.

As we continue to break barriers and pave the way for future generations, let’s lift each other up, support one another. Happy International Women’s Day!
